Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey is highlighted in Day 7 of our #12DaysofGiving Celebration. Wiss is happy to highlight this organization that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities and other special needs by supporting personal growth, independence and participation in the community.

CPNJ was founded in 1953 by the parents of children with cerebral palsy who wanted better services for their loved ones. They operated from donated space in the basement of Orange Memorial Hospital and the organization has steadily grown over the years. Today it is a $36 million dollar organization with more than 800 staff members at 19 program sites serving more than 1,500 infants, children and adults with disabilities.

They have a team of more than 100 experts in physical, speech and occupational therapy as well as developmental intervention. CPNJ provides assistance with assistive technology, augmentative and alternative communication and psychology. Their Early Intervention Program also offers peer group community events that are fun for children and an ideal opportunity for parents to meet, network and share resources.

Wiss participated in CPNJ’s Read Across America Day where we went to a local school for children with special needs. Each one of our team members was given the name of a child who would be our reading buddy for the morning. It was a very rewarding experience getting to know these children, their unique personalities, their stories from their teachers and just watching them enjoy the individualized attention. Carrie Grotz, Administrative Assistant recalls, “I loved going there and picking out the name and age of the child I wanted to read to. It was super exciting when I met him. The boy I chose happened to be the one who lead us to our reading room and he was so proud in doing so. I was honored to be able to read to someone else’s child and while I went there to ‘gift’ my time, I  was really the one to receive the gift.”

You can help by donating or volunteering your time to this wonderful organization.
