We all want a chance to interview and show what we are made of. But first, we have to make a good impression. Here are some Resume tips to help you get that interview!
Keep it direct:
- You don’t have to make your resume extremely detailed. Think of it as a tool for getting your foot in the door, you will have time to elaborate when you have your interview.
- Don’t worry about including your objective, the employer should be able to figure out what your objective is based on your resume.
- Also, don’t put reference information on your resume. This will just take up valuable space. Most of the time, if needed, employers will likely request you to include your references on the job application you fill out for them.
Sell Yourself:
- View your resume as a commercial. You only have a few moments to capture your audience’s attention.
- Don’t be afraid to show your strengths via positive keywords, you’re selling yourself!! Don’t be modest.
- When putting your resume together, keep this tip in mind. Review the job description and then review your resume. You should try to make the two connect and emphasize the information (ex. Qualifications, experience and skills) that the employer is seeking. This will help your resume stand out.
Layout:
- Should show the following-
- Contact Information
- Education (list your GPA, leaving it out will only lead to the employer to assume it’s not the best)
- Relevant Experience/Work History
- Skills (Quickbooks, Excel Knowledge, etc.)
- Honors/Achievements
- Make it Neat – The layout of the resume is important, it should be easy to look at and remain consistent throughout the document. There’s a good chance if you don’t like the way it looks, neither will the recruiter.
- Keep all of your information on one page, unless you’re a CEO with 25+ years of experience (yes, I might be slightly exaggerating) you don’t need more than one page for your resume. And don’t make your font smaller than size 11 or use less than the standard one-inch margins just to keep it one page.
Content:
- Easy on the contact information, you don’t need to put more than one address and phone number. Putting your cell phone number is best and provide your email address.
- Provide specific details about your work experience (specific skills that you have acquired and how it was utilized on the job)
- Mention any foreign language you speak or understand.
- Don’t use colors, please don’t. You can show your personality during the interview, not through a piece of paper.
- Proofread, proofread and proofread again!!
